Mikami hates criminals. Once you memorized these two simple phrases, you have grasped the core of his character. To Mikami, crime is unforgivable. Once a person has crossed the line and become a criminal, Mikami deems them worthy of death and nothing else. He does not forgive, he does not forget. There's no grey zones to Mikami. He just genuinely believes the world would be better off if all criminals were dead and gone, regardless of the reasons for their crime. Mikami believes himself to be the gold standard of human morality. He is righteous and because he is righteous, he has the ability to tell whether or not anybody else is. His standards are strict. Even among people who aren't criminals, most people still disappoint Mikami's lofty ideas of what a good and productive human should be like. This leaves him fairly socially isolated, but he is not particularly sad for it. Who needs contact to the unjust anyway? In the past, his trust in the righteousness of his mother has been disappointed and it left him wary of letting anyone else in. Mikami lives a stubbornly solitary life this way. ♚ RIGIDITY. Mikami loves order. Mikami hates chaos. Simple antonyms like this define his life. Order is justice, chaos is crime. Justice is simple, justice is comprehensible, justice is predictable. Mikami detests surprises or changes in plan and accordingly, he lives his entire life on a tight schedule. More than anyone, he relies on structure to keep him afloat. Every week is the exact same – he even ignores every major holiday of his country in favor of keeping up with his pattern. His mental ridigity really manifests 1:1 in his daily life here. He is also noted to be somewhat obsessed with cleanliness. Mikami likes to control what he can and he creates an orderly microcosm for himself through his scheduling. ♚ DEDICTATION & SKILL. Most of this punctual daily life of Mikami's is filled with work. He is diligent to the point of being a workaholic. His work as a prosecutor means absolutely everything to him. Even beyond the fact that it is his dream job of punishing criminals, Mikami generally values it highly to be a productive member of society. As such, he puts his everything into his job and even comes home at variable times – it's the one and only changeable component of his schedule. Mikami is also exceptionally gifted at what he does. His dedication combines with naturally high intelligence to create what may well be referred to as a genius prosecutor. Mikami passed the Japanese bar exam at first try in 2003 - a time when its failure rate was 98%. ♚ CHILDHOOD TRAUMA. All of the abovementioned traits are very much a direct result of Mikami's traumatic childhood experiences. He is a man who is continously haunted by his past and does all that he does in direct response to it. As a kid Mikami was very self-sacrificial, protecting bullied kids from their bullies. This eventually led to him being the bullying target himself. When he confessed this to his mother, she told him to stop voluntarily putting himself in a situation where he could be picked on. This put a rift between them that might have mended over time if it had not been for one very unfortunate coincidence: Mikami's mother was run over by Mikami's bullies shortly after, dying alongside them. This changed Mikami's mindset absolutely forever. Now orphaned, he was faced with the choice to either believe that a.) the death of his mother was entirely coincidental, there is no justice, he is all alone with nobody looking out for him or b) there is a higher principle of justice that punished unrighteous people (the bullies) – this principle is looking out for Mikami because he is good, nothing he does is pointless. Mikami chooses option B. He rationalizes the death of his mother as an act of God and uses this concept of God to motivate himself internally. He is so rigid in it because if he ever questions this mental construct, he'd have to face the reality that all his suffering was pointless. He'd much much rather believe he's God's favourite child, making the pain other humans inflict on him seem unimportant and bearable. ♚ RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. This concept of God still absolutely defines Mikami's adult life. He can easily be considered a fanatic of this religion he made up for himself. His idea of God very roughly follows Shinto beliefs (it is a concept that can incarnate as a person) but mostly it is simply a coping mechanism. Deep down, Mikami just wants there to be something that validates him in the exact way he wants to be validated. Thus his belief in God once he manifests before him as Light Yagami is rather conditional – Mikami's highest moral standard is still himself, even if he doesn't realize this. But that isn't to say he wouldn't go to incredible lengths for who he perceives to be God. Mikami still has a self-sacrificial streak to him. In canon, he gives up half his lifespan joyfully for the cause of his judging God. He also commits around 2000 murders (via the magical notebook where you can write someone down and it kills them) and then assists around 6000 more – all in the name of justice. By his current canon-point, his precise memory of these events is erased, but even if he knew for sure, he would not regret any of it. |
